Just chiming in here from over on the disability side of things, where we can testify that it doesn’t matter what you call yourself, your terminology will get used as a slur by people who don’t want you to exist because you fuck up their ideas of how the world should be. So, call yourself whatever you want, and don’t yield to the people who don’t care what you’re called, because your greatest crime is existing in the first place. They’re never going to have a polite word for you anyway.
Some ya’ll who are younger need to google Frank Serpico and read about his time in the NYPD and what the cops did to him and attempted to do to him up until the late 90′s. Normalize people with chronic illness taking sick days, coming in late, cancelling plans, not being able do do something in time. People’s illness should not be held against them like a threat and people should not act surprised if someone who is chronically ill aczually falls ill. This is not “we are ok with you as long as your illness is under control and you function normally” this is “we are aware that you are chronically ill and will actually show understanding when your illness keeps you from performing”.
